August Free Catfishing Prize Drawing

I put together another prize pack of catfishing goodies for the month of August and am opening up things for the month for someone to win some more free catfishing goodies. I am going to try to keep this up every month (or even more frequently with some smaller prizes) if at all possible if I can keep them coming in.

To enter to win sign up for the newsletter (remember you have to opt in, so make sure you enter your email address correctly, and then once you do so check your email and verify your email address by clicking the link in the email you receive). Obviously if you are already signed up for the newsletter, you don’t need to do so again.

Once you have signed up for the newsletter, just comment on the blog post below and you will be entered to win. When you comment on the blog post put some thought into it. Give me some feedback on what you would like to see more information on, what articles or videos you like etc.

I often times just pick a winner at random and those with a comment like “enter my name to win” rarely get picked.

If you are already signed up for the newsletter, then just comment below. If for some reason you have issues signing up for the newsletter (you cannot see the signup form) than you most likely have an issue with your web browser (meaning it is too old and needs to be updated).  I highly suggest Google Chrome.

Included in this prize pack is:

One package of Magic Soap for getting the fish smell off your hands

A copy of Girls Gone Grabblin

secret channel catfish rig

Two packages of Redneck’s Catfish Bait Soap

A Daiichi Fishing Team baseball cap

North Texas Catfish Guide Service baseball cap

Bobber With A Brain Fishing Bobber

Again, just sign up for the newsletter and then comment on this post below in the comment section with your state that you live in and the biggest catfish you have ever caught (how many pounds) and we will enter you to win the prize pack. The winner will be announced on the last day of the month when we post our month in review.

Make sure you visit the tackle page for the list of products that I use in my catfish guide service.

Visit all of the pages on Learn To Catch Catfish for more great catfishing tips, tricks and information. Subscribe to our daily feed for daily updates by email as we add them and our newsletter for less frequent updates and to gain access to exclusive content and promotions as they become available. You can also keep up by following on Twitter and Facebook.

    Entering for contest!

As for what I’d like to see on the site: How about a page for optimal rig set ups within certain price ranges. For example, if you had only $200 to buy an all new catfishing rig, what would you spend and what would you hold off on? Alot of newcomers are making these types of decisions and would love to see an easy to read post with information to help make the decision easier.

I live in Alabama and the biggest Catfish I have ever caught is somewhere between 4-6 lbs. Me and my girlfriend bought a boat about a month ago for bass and cat fishing, but we ran into Bendix problems while out on the lake our first night and waited 4 hours until we found someone to tow us in. We will have it fixed and ready to go this weekend so we plan to go to Lay lake and try to find some decent size cats. I’m pretty new to fishing outside of fishing in small ponds so this site has been a great help with all the general advice and different ways to rig your line.

Chad – would like to see more detail defining the structure and contour of the areas that you fish and why you fish them. There has to be something unique in your top 4 or 5 honeyholes for you to call them a go to hole bettern known as a honeyhole. I am a firm believer that 20% of a lake is productive for fishing and the other 80% is for skiers and jet fleas.

    tnx,

Chad, I really enjoy your catfish tips and tricks and have learned a lot and look forward to reading them and your newsletter. Like the forum
    also.
I have tried and liked your catfish soap and it worked well for me.
I fish rod and reel, limb lines, and jugs and enjoy it all. I keep the smaller eaters and let the bigger ones go back.
Please add my name to the contest and keep on teaching dummies like me how to fish.

I watched some of the Girls gone Grabblin clips; really cool and I was happy to see they were well done. A chance so see some really nice fish right under your feet when you “bank fish”.
I mostly fish from the bank or shore and I’d like to see some hints and tricks for fishing in the summer for channel cats.
I’m also looking forward to trying some of your soap bait.
Thanks for all of the info you give out!

Great website. I have enjoyed looking through all of the articles and have learned quite a few things.
I am fishing in North Texas and the biggest I have caught here from the bank is about a 4lb channel cat. Caught larger ones in Central Texas, closer to 8 lbs.
I watched several clips of the Girls gone Grabblin and appreciate how well made they are. It’s cool to see the great fish they find right under places where I usually fish.
Do you have any suggestions for bank fishermen? That’s what I normally do and any input in future articles would be great.
Thanks for all that you do and share with us!

I like the writeups on catfish rigs and punch bait. I have had good luck with your bait soap in the past but no actual knowledge to go with it, just blind luck I guess. . . and great bait!

More info on how you pick a spot to fish or what to look for for trophy blues, limits of channel cats, etc. I can only catch the fish I can stumble onto.

I first want to say I really enjoy you site and have learned some stuff.

Like the Sponges you cut from felt hat sponge, never even thought of that. I also tried the santee rig with good results.

Now I just couldnt bring myself to read Catfishing with a bat, My first thought was you were suppose to club them to death? Well this past weekend I finally read it and purchased my bat pluged the hole cut off the end. I was set and went out to catch a big one, loaded up the bat and let it fly just about the time a gust of wind blew all the aromatic jucies of soured milo across my right side. (NOTE: need warning lables for bat). Then I was slinging the bat around and got it in my eye that stuff burns. I never claimed to be the sharpest knife in the drawer. I provied fun for the entire family. I wound up catching my first 5 lb. channel cat that night and along with some nice 2 and 3 lb.

Keep up the great job with the site I really enjoy the posts and videos.

I forgot to comment about this post Are You Buying Catfish Gear To Catch Fish, Or Fishermen?

If your going fishing with me dont let me stop at the bait shop Ill buy every new thing in the store. I get caught just about every week. Now I have to say I think its getting a little better, I havent bought anything the last week, but I have bought 2 110.00 rod and read combos. 10′ and 11′ every hook you can imagine, punch bait, bobbers, rod holders, ect. I could have bought a boat by now. I NEED HELP!

    Thanks

    Chad,
I have enjoyed your newsletters and website. The catfishing on rod and reel is new to me and I think I am addicted now. While not being able to do as much fishing as I would like, I intend to educate myself on the downtime and I find your website an important wealth of knowledge. I appreciate the fact you seem to be eager to educate those of us while being mindful of the expense, especially to us newcomers. The other sites seem to be more interested in pushing high-end gear. Although I understand the economics of advertising and sponsorships, I appreciate your approach. Keep up the good work and I’ll look forward to your next post. Oh, and please put me in for the drawing.
    Thanks

Just found your site. I used to go catfishing with my dad all of the time. I would like to get my boys started asap. Your info is very practical; throwing a cast net, correctly launching a boat, introduction of new products, etc. Do you ever post any recipes for cooking catfish? Do you ever use chicken blood? That’s what we used.
I live in Ennis, TX and my biggest catfish was a 6 pounder I caught on a lure in the creek at my deer lease. I would like to be considered for this month’s prize drawing. Keep up the good work.

Me and my girl friend went on a fishing trip with you last month. I learned alot from you that evening. I caught an eight pound catfish the other night out of the Brazos using Sure-shot catfish bait. It was awesome. For that matter I’ve been catching some pretty good ones here lately. I can’t wait till fall. I’m going to go with you to catch the big blues. I’d also like to try that bobber and If I had that soap it would motivate me into running a few trot lines. See ya this fall…

    Hey Chad, love the site.

I’m a bankfisherman here in North Texas. While I’m not out much in this 100+ degree heat we’ve been having, I am ready to kick some kittie hynie when the weather cools down!

I don’t fish for large but about 8 lb. is my largest. would like to see a article on how heat (hot weather )afects catfish and procedures used to fish for them in hot weather. As the day grows warmer should the fisherman move to deeper water? do bait choices change with water temp. changes? This is a great site.

    Yo, Chad:

The basic message I have for you, my man, is simply to think outside the bait box and think “entertainment value.” Sure, you’ve got plenty of good solid info for folks, but sometimes that info goes down a bit easier (or more effectively) if you can serve up a few chuckles and an occasional belly-laugh with the instruction.

For example, how about a monthly feature of the website called “Th’ Centerfold.” Obviously, it would sport a photo of a really nice cat, or maybe just a particularly good (funny?) outdoor or fishin’ photo — most of us like to look at good photography. Give a prize for the best one each month.

Another idea: You could do interviews with big, veteran catfish of various species. This could be done in print only, or on video (you’d need editing software to animate the fish’s mouth as he “talks”). This would be mostly for fun, but you could also weave some solid info into the answers. Ask the blue cat what it was like growing up in the mean creek channels of Texoma. Answer: The roving gangs of channel cats were bad about beatin’ me up and stealing my lunch money, but runnin’ the gauntlet of juglines without gettin’ caught was the toughest part . . . I never met a shad I didn’t wanna eat RIGHT NOW!

What’s the most common mistake that fishermen make?
Answer: That’s easy — usin’ itty-bitty baits and wimpy tackle, an’ thinkin’ they’re gonna land a big ol’ cat like myself. Shoot, when it’s time to chow down, I’m about as bashful as Bill Clinton in a whorehouse — I want somethin’ with some meat on it’s bones! An’ runnin’ at me with those wet-noodle rods an’ 8 lb. test is plum’ insultin’ — I mean, I’ll spool ya just as a matter of professional pride.

There’s this old, hairy story told around lots of lakes about the scuba divers who are down by the dam in the real deep water. They’re inspectin’ the dam or doing some sort of repair, as the story usually goes. Well, they bail outta there in a hurry, lucky to make it back to their boat. The gist of the story is that they encountered mammoth catfish as big as Buicks down there in the briny deep and that the cats were eyeing the divers like they were steak fingers. Always, the divers were fortunate to escape with their lives and vow never to go down there again. Is there any truth at all to this old story?
Answer: W-e-l-l, let’s just say that I wouldn’t recommend doin’ any scuba divin’ down at the dam with a bowl o’ gravy in your hand!

You get the idea, Chad: These interviews would be for laughs!

As for me, my personal best, on a throwline, was a 6 lb. channel. But the most fun was the 5-pounder I caught while throwin’ a Hellbender for bass. I was fishin’ from a bellyboat and that wild cat spun me literally 360 degrees plus during the battle! I felt sure that I had hooked a 9 or 10 lb. bass!

Thank you for considering me for your drawing!

I would like to see what the concensus is on rigging for bank fishing versus drifting or fishing structure from a boat. I pretty much rig the same for both, only moving my float closer or farther away from the hook onthe leader. Who does it differently, and how? Also, with a lot more women getting into catfishing, some articles on the easiest ways to clean and prep your catch would be good. (I take care of my own,as I have been fishing most of my life, but not all gals have a guy to do this for them.) Now, in case the first thought/answer to that question that comes to mind is filleting, please provide some filleting techniques, and some suggestions on the best tools/knives for it. Thanks for your hard work, it is appreciated!

    Chad,

Your website and constant devotion to furthering the sport of catfishing is greatly appreciated by both myself and my son. We moved to East Texas earlier this year and are new to the sport. Knowing nothing about how to catch catfish other than throwing a hook in the water, I started looking around and found several different sites.

Your website stands out above all the rest for many reasons. I love the user friendly format which makes navigation a breeze. The information it put forth in a straight forward and easy to digest manner. Being a greenhorn angler I appreciate how the content is presented in a “for beginners” approach.

As for what I’d like to see more of; I’d greatly appreciate bank fishing advice, particularly what makes a good fishing spot. Where to look for catfish, etc. I don’t know how many of your readers have a boat vs bankfishing, but I’m willing to bet there are more of us boat-less than one might first expect.

As to your contest, I’d like to enter my son Joseph’s name. He’s had a wonderful summer fishing and is very excited every time we go out. Getting fishing gear in the mail as a “Prize” would mean so much more to him then if I were to win.

In closing, great website, great information, great contribution to bettering the sport.

    With sincere gratitude,

    Justin D. Wilcox
