The elusive and much sought after blue catfish. I have been sifting through all of the catfishing questions that have been sent to me over the past year that I have yet to answer and stumbled upon a common theme among these questions regard catfishing for blue catfish. These questions are all over the place but all have a common them that seems to tie them all together, which is people looking for a way to cut corners and bypass steps or learning that cannot be bypassed in order to be successful catching blue catfish.
I spend some time here and there on several fishing forums and one in particular I have seen hundred of people come and go over the years but it seems every time someone new comes along that doesn’t have much experience catching catfish they ask the same questions each and every time and often times are met with loads of bad information that is not going to get them any close to their quest of catching blue catfish or catching big blue catfish.
With that in mind I got to brainstorming the other day and thinking about these questions that seem to come up repeatedly and how I could provide a “manual” of sorts to answer each and every one of these questions that get emailed to me over and over again.
I sat down and made a long list of all these questions and decided within minutes that there was no way to answer these questions in one article or a couple of catfishing videos so after a lot of though I decided I would create a series of posts. Right now there is a list of 49 topics but I am sure they will ultimately get condensed and reworked when I get further into this endeavor and the list will end up shorter. I am going to tie these all back together into one article at some point to create a central landing page with some of this information on catfishing for blue catfish.
So what’ the common theme among these questions?
I sifted through hundreds of emails and see the same thing over and over again about blue catfish and that is people looking for a magic bullet to catch number of fish, catch big fish, or both and they don’t have the knowledge, equipment or know how to get to their end goal and be successful, yet they want to skip the part where they get the knowledge of what they need to be able to be successful, and how to learn to get to that point, or are looking for a “magic bullet” so to speak.
Much of the the questions go like this.
I want to catch a monster blue catfish, can you tell me what I need to do to catch them and will frozen bait work?
This is a watered down version of these questions but I could literally post hundreds of questions that are basically along the same lines as this one, but all are relatively the same and tie back to people wanting to get to their end goal of catching blue catfish.
This is Blue Catfish 101.
There is no magic bullet. If catching blue catfish was as simple as saying go here, do this, fish with this bait and you will catch fish then I could pretty much solve everyone’s woes about catching catfish with about ten articles and be done with Learn To Catch Catfish in a matter of weeks.
To be truly successful catfishing for blue catfish you have to take the journey. Different catfish species have different habits and patterns and are all very different. The approach to catch channel catfish is often quite different than catching blue catfish and these are both quite different than the approach you would take to catching flathead catfish.
Think if it like a symphony, if you just had one single instrument like a violin you have some music but when you add in all of the different instruments you have something that becomes quite impressive.
There is no “one thing”, no “smoking gun” or no “magic bullet” so to speak that is going miraculously make you start finding and catching blues. It’s a process of learning and having all of the right “instruments” playing at the same time, right location, right rig, right bait, right time, right technique.
This might not make sense but in typical fashion I am going to take something and build upon it, and at some point will tie it all back together and it should make perfect sense, so bear with me.
