Bobber With A Brain Review

Review of the Bobber With A Brain for catfishing.

Bobber With A Brain Fishing Bobbers

At first glance the Bobber With A Brain looks like a slip bobber on steroids and I have to admit that I was a skeptic after looking at the companies website, but the manufacturer of the Bobber With A Brain, Big Ten Tackle sent me some of these to test and do a product review on them (as well as some to give away to the readers).

The manufacturer of the Bobber With A Brain sells this cork as the worlds only ten function bobbers.

I took this product for a test drive to let the readers in on this product and exactly how it works.

The ten functions are listed as (this is just a summary, for more detail go to their website)

  1. No Line Stopper Needed – Patented magnetic locking mechanism makes stops obsolete.
  2. Vertical Jugging – Light whipping motion of the rod tip causes it to tip.
  3. Trolling Action – Reeling it in slowly allows your baits to glide along the bottom as if you are trolling from a boat.
  4. Resets – As you reel it in your bait raises with the sinker towards the surface. (I would imagine this would GREATLY reduce snags especially when bank fishing)
  5. Multi Level Fishing – Makes multi-level fishing possible from any casting point.
  6. Super Sensitive – Releases line as a fish bites, only has to pivot slightly to detect a bite, because of line release it seldom goes under which causes repeated bait strikes.
  7. Stationary – Won’t drift in 25 mile per hour wind or medium current.  Also excellent for boat drift fishing.
  8. Fishes From The Bottom Up – Uses bottom as a reference point, not the top. The baits distance off the bottom is determined by how far you place your bait above the sinker.
  9. Automatic – Simply casting positions single or multiple baits, inches or feet off the bottom without a stop.
  10. Works Any Depth – Automatically releases line until the sinker strikes the bottom, then pictors locking the line. Baits above the sinker never touch bottom.

Here is a video from the manufacturer of the Bobber With A Brain that explains the functions

And now the review of the Bobber With A Brain

After fishing with thisI found that it did exactly what the manufacturer said it does and works exactly as described. We had a very windy day where my guided fishing trip got cancelled so we tested the float out from the bank with different rigs and configurations. It worked exceptionally well.

At first, it was a little awkward to rig, as you rig it in reverse of a conventional slip float, feeding the line through the bottom of the float instead of the top. You do have to rig with the sinker on the bottom of the rig which requires some rigging that I don’t traditionally use. A three way rig would probably be preferable for catfishing with it. The company has the rigging options clearly listed on their website. There are a lot of different options and you can even take the top of out and use the top like a traditional slip float (if you add a split shot or stop). You can view all of the rigging options for here.

I can say that of everything that I tested when fishing with this slip bobber while catfishing it did EXACTLY what the manufacturer said it would.  It is a little bulky, but I think that bulk adds not only to the sensitivity but it’s ability to perform all of its functions. They sent us some light sticks and they attached nicely to the top and were highly visible from quite a way away.

I think the combination of the light stick with the sensitivity of the float would make it very effective for night fishing.

While I don’t think this would replace my traditional slip floats for fishing from a boat in some applications I do see where it could easily out perform a traditional slip float in many applications.

If you are fishing from the bank, I don’t think you would find a better tool in your arsenal. I think the fact that it automatically sets the depth is worse the price alone because when bank fishing with a slip cork you never know how deep you are actually fishing, which can be a deal killer when catfishing. This combined with the fact that it works well in high winds (according the manufacturer) would be a great asset as well. We tested it in about 45 mph winds and although it did not remain stationary, I don’t think anything would, and I was surprised at how well it actually did perform in those winds. Last but not least the fact that the sinker raises with it when reeling in (see resets above) would greatly reduce snags.

The bottom line, it does exactly what they say it does and performs well, As stated above I think it has specific applications but I especially think when catfishing from the bank it would outperform most other bobbers.

Any chance to see a video of you using this on catfish? I see on their website them using it for trout, but would actually like too see the bobber in action with a bite. Thanks.

Thanks for the review. Watched it with interest last night and based on your comments and reading the web site, I ordered a pack of them. I’m going to try them Catfshing on Eagle Mountain lake just west of Fort Worth in TX. Will post how I get on with them. Thanks again … looking forward to reading the other articles.

I got some of the Bobber with a Brain bobbers and took them out on the lake yesterday. I fished some regular bobbers at the same time as BWAB just to compare. Unfortunately the bite was really poor so it wasn’t a great test at all. From a mechanical perspective, I did note the following.

The bobber is very heavy. It can cast a great distance but make a big splash when it hits the water.

The way BWAB locks itself in place is with a steel ball bearing and a magnet. With my line through the magnet (circular magnet), the ball bearing didn’t have that much “sticking power” to hold my 10lb line in place. The slightest tug and it moved smoothly. This makes me nervous that in a wind or current the bobber is simply going to slide/slip through the line. Since the bobber is self righting, you’ll never know that you have way too much slack under the bobber and light bites will be missed.

Since the bobber attached backward to the line (line from reel enters the bottom of the bobber), I am not yet sure quite what a bite will look like. I can’t see it doing a satisfying dip under the water. I imagine it will merely tip the bobber which to my liking isn’t as pleasant/satisfying as the bobber dipping under.

That all said … my test was the first for me and the bite was so poor that there was little to report in the way of actual fish.

If your looking for a something to detect an ultra light bite you probably should look more towards a standard slip bobber.

Thanks Chad. I have been using the slip bobber for a while. What has me intrigued by the BWAB is the notion of it being self adjusting for depth. I had hoped it would have combined the alerting of bites to the convenience of variable depth. I’m going to keep on trying both some more though.

Chad, thank you for your review. I have to admit that after seeing the rudimentary drawings on the advertiser’s website I had to look for reviews to make sure this product was in fact up to the standards it advertises. Your review definitely stands out amongst the rest. I haven’t had much luck fishing in our local canal because the depth varies quite a bit and a wind-tunnel affect takes place in that location. I will also be going to Pennsylvania next week to fish in untested waters so having this bobber in my tackle box would help. Again, thanks for the review and great job!

Thanks. Obviously my trial of the product was limited but like I said, everything I tried worked exactly like they said it did. Let me know how it works for you.

I use the bobber with a brain for catching every kind of fish bass, crappie, stripers and catfish I think it’s the best float out there.
