The weather was really nasty in North Texas this past weekend, we went from low 70′s temperatures on Friday to freezing temperatures on Saturday and even had a snow blanket over night Saturday and Sunday morning. Anyone that knows Texas weather knows that it can change at a moments notice.
I had to cancel a guided catfishing trip on Lake Lewisville and on Eagle Mountain lake due to the high winds, it was too cold to get caught up making catfish bait soap. This left me with the weekend with a bunch of time to get things done around the house, do some work on my boat, and get caught up on a bunch of other things (including working on taxes which was NOT the highlight of the weekend).
Anyone that knows me well knows I like to tinker around and build things, tear things apart and rebuild them and spend time seeing how I can modify things to work in some other way. Whoever said that idle hands are the devils workshop was probably thinking about me because when I get down time I get myself in trouble (this is how Redneck’s Juglines were born).
Anyway Mrs. Redneck sent me to the store with a list of stuff to buy this weekend for dinner. While I am on the subject, let me refer you to a website called Pioneer Woman Cooks. My wife reads the pioneer woman’s blog daily and is constantly cooking recipes from here website, which have all been nothing less than 100% excellent. Do yourself a favor and get your wife or whomever cooks in your household looking at the Pioneer Woman Cooks and trying some of these recipes. I personally recommend the “Marboro Man’s Favorite Sandwich” it is the best sandwich I have ever had, bar none.
Anyway, so I am at Wal-Mart and my Wal-Mart trips have tendency to get sidetracked often with catfishing supplies, new tools and who knows what else (not to mention my daughter has to look at EVERY doll on the toy aisle when she is with me).
Somehow I was walking down the aisle and spotted a baseball bat hanging at the end of one of the aisles, (it was one of these big fat plastic whiffle ball bats) and an idea hit me, so I grabbed one and headed to the front of the store (after a stop by the tool aisle for absolutely no reason ) and headed home with the whiffle ball bat for catfishing.
A whiffle ball bat for catfishing?
Yes that was the first thing my son said after I pried the bat from his hands and pried the ball from my daughter’s hand as they had full intentions of a game of whiffle ball in the living room which was headed nowhere good for me (I have tendency to let these things happen and then Mrs. Redneck gets a hold of me and it goes downhill really fast).
Anyway, yes, I am going to show you how to use a whiffle ball bat for catfishing. No I am not going to tell you tp club the fish with a baseball bat, or to attempt to whack them out of the air like a-rod or anything else, but I am going to show you a really handy trick for catfishing that involves a whiffle ball bat. It is something I learned on my Florida Keys tarpon fishing trip (see I told you I would come back to that).
I posted a short video on Youtube about catfishing with a whiffle ball bat and pretty soon I am going to show you how to “hack” the whiffle ball bat and how I plan to use a whiffle ball bat for catfishing, I just need to get some time to video what I am going to do to the bat and then get on the water and show you how I am going to use. I am still trying to decide if I should fire my camera man so that may have bearing on how long it takes to get the information posted here.
Make sure you subscribe and stay tuned so you will know when we add this catfishing tip and tricks!
Here Is The Video Blog Post
I am curious to see what people think of the video blog posts. It is not something I plan to do every day but it sure would save me some typing. Do you like the video blog posts?
Feel free to guess how I am going to use a whiffle ball bat for catfishing in the replies section below, I am curious to see what the responses are.
Update: August 4, 2010 – The Catfishing with a baseball bat information has been revealed! Click here to learn the reason I go catfishing with a baseball bat.

Perhaps cut the end off and use it for a clonk?
Chad you might be on to something there sounds like it might work pretty good.
It would make one heckuva a “Slip Bobber” type setup!!!!!
Are you going to use that bat for “jug fishing”. You should see that bat from a long way off
That would be my guess too.
We will be adding some more info soon!
I don’t mind the daily updates – helpful to remember to check the site often.
I know cats seem to be attracted to splashing (long time ago me and my bro got a bit tippsy one nite and were tossing rocks at our bobbers ) and it seemed to draw the cats to us and we caught a whole bunch of channel cats on Bend Lake in eastern Washington.
So you might whack the wter to draw them in is my guess.
the videos are great i do not know where ya find all the time to guide raise kids and put all this on the internet my hats off to ya. I would guess ya are gonna use that bat as a jug on a jug line, one of em cut up a little would make a good scoop for the chum too. (i use chicken scratch to make chum and it costs about the same as the wheat 3 grain scratch) and it does smell something awful. I have also sewn burlap bags into sections of 6 and soured the grain in them and dropped em off at different places to bait a hole and it seemed to work really well and the catfish are not full of chum when ya clean em.lol anyway good day to ya
ya have a great site i really enjoy it good health to all
FATCAT
Several of the ideas sound really good, but one that I thought of is cut a sizable hole up in the taper of the bat ( where it starts to get smaller in diameter) .
Drill numerous holes up and down the head of the bat. Put a couple of holes in the very end of the bat as well.
Fill the bat with chum, tie a small rope around the handle and throw out into the current. The holes in the bat will act like a sive allowing water to pass through, as well as the ombience of the chum.
I am always having fun trying to figure out new tricks and ideas for catching more fish. I’ve tried a bunch. The bat idea is a totally new one to me. Suprised I haven’t came up with that one yet. My wife is a avid fisherwoman, but even she sometimes thinks that I have lost my mind. I am really looking forward to seeing how you incorporate this into a “what the heck?” fishing method that you will figure out how to make it work I am sure.
Keep an eye out because we will be posting the next installment soon!
I think fat cat is on to your idea with the chum. Scoop it up and give it a good swing.
chad would a baseball bat also make a good jug
