Extreme Shallow Water Catfishing – April 2011

extreme_shallow_water_catfishing_spring_2011

I have been making more of an effort to shoot more on the water action catfishing videos over the past couple of months when fishing with my clients and have been doing a much better job of it. In the last couple of months or so I have collected several hours of action video, I just need to get in and edit them so I can get them online. I have a lot of “partial” videos as well where I have to sit the camera down to grab a catfish or tend to the dip net etc (still looking for a camera man also if anyone wants to volunteer).

Last weekend some clients of mine that have been catfishing with me for years came out and fished for the day. We got anchored with our shallow water anchors and within about five minutes the wind was up to the point that it was near impossible to stay on anchor, even after throwing out both of my Digger Anchors plus the shallow water anchors and fishing in a semi protected area.

We ended up with a mixed bag of blue catfish and a few channel catfish for the day despite the wind conditions making it virtually impossible to move but that is the way it goes sometimes.

One of my clients fishing on this trip shot several videos with his iPhone while we we fishing and managed to capture a fairly decent video of the biggest fish of the day (22 lbs). This is a pretty good picture of catfishing in extreme shallow water here in Texas. The water we are fishing in this video is less than a foot deep. The outboard motor is sitting deep down in the mud.

Gear: (Because everyone always asks) we were fishing with gizzard shad and threadfin shad fished both whole and cut using a combination of slip sinker rigs and santee rigs (you can find both of these on the catfish rigs page).  Tackle is Abu Garcia 6500C3 reels, Salmon/Steelhead fishing rods, Daiichi Circle Chunk Light Hooks (size 7/0) you can find all of these items on the suggested catfish tackle page.

If your looking for some more spring catfishing videos you can check out one of the Spring Catfishing  with Barry Stokes and Spring Catfishing with the Texas Divas articles and videos here at Learn To Catch Catfish for some more great videos and information (there are a lot of great tips in tricks in both videos).

This is hands down my favorite time of fishing for numbers of blue catfish and we usually catch some decent numbers of trophy blue catfish as well!

good article. I fished on santee cooper lake marion the other week with a guide so i now understand what shallow water bluecatfishing is like. we fished a foot of water. One question about that is do you base where you fish shallow water at based on the wind and where mud is?
