I had a friend tell me about a fish called the goonch catfish or gooch catfish . I would like go catch one. Can you tell me what lakes or rivers have goonch catfish or gooch catfish in them and how I would go about catching one?

Alvin Jones – Montgomery Alabama

Alvin,

The goonch catfish, much like other catfish can grow to enormous size and weight. Unfortunately, your not going to be able to catch one in Alabama, or anywhere else in the United States for that Matter.  The fish is also commonly referred to as a “killer catfish”.

The goonch makes it home in the Great Kali River running between India and Nepal, a stretch of water that is often used to dispose of funeral pyres after Hindu funerals.

There are suspicions that the goonch has often eaten the half burned human bodies placed into the river after the funerals. It is believed that them eating these human bodies have helped them, or at least some of them, grow to the huge sizes that they have. It is also believed that it may have helped them to develop a taste for eating human flesh, causing attacks on live humans.

The goonch has been accused of a number of attacks on live humans and is blamed in the death of an 17 year old in 2008. Eye witnesses reported that an “elongated pig” dragged the 18 year old down into the Great Kali River. A search was conducted by local villagers and no remains were ever found.

Years prior in 1998 a young boy was pulled under water in front of his father, and again no corpse was ever found. A similar attack had occurred a few months prior.

The goonch  gained notoriety in the United States within the last couple of years when it appeared on the popular Animal Planet TV show “River Monsters” (the TV show also filmed an episode in Texas on the Trinity River fishing for alligator gar).

Even though you cannot catch a “Killer Catfish” in the United States if you want to catch a big cat you can certainly do some fishing for big blues and flatheads and catch a big fish that way!
