A Simple Way To Keep Catfish Punch Bait Thick In The Heat
__________________________________________________________
The other day I posted an article about catfish punch bait that I had updated and consolidated several different posts on catfish punch bait into one article titled catfish punch bait 101 that covers some basic principles and information on fishing with these types of baits. If you are still wondering what punch bait is then go here and watch this video.
I mentioned in punch bait 101 some tips and tricks for keeping punch bait thick and firm where it will stay on the hook in warmer (or hot) weather and one of the things I mentioned doing was buying two buckets (or splitting a bucket) and keeping one on ice while fishing with another one, and then rotating them when the one you are actively using starts to get soft.
Now, I am going to let you in on another trick for keeping punch baits nice and firm during the hot weather.
I have mentioned several times refrigerating or freezing the bait and making sure it is nice and cool before you get to the lake or river where you will be catfishing, and again alternating buckets.
An additional trick to helping to keep it nice and cool is to get a small ice chest with a slip top lid like this, and instead of keeping the bait in the bucket that it comes in, scooping it out and putting it inside the cooler.

By doing so, it solves several problems, but first and foremost, you can put the entire cooler in a refrigerator or freezer and get it nice and cold before you go to the lake. The insulation in the cooler will greatly help in keeping the bait cool for longer periods of time than the standard plastic buckets like most of these products come in.
The added bonus is that it is much easier to bait a hook with the flat sides of the cooler and having something to push up against, versus the round inner walls of the traditional plastic buckets.
In addition, anyone that has used these types of baits very often knows that the smell can be pretty rough at times. Most people have tendency to open the bucket and start using it and never place the lid back on until they are finished fishing. Having the handy flip top lid on the cooler makes it easier to open and close the container and bait the hooks at any given time, and also helps to contain the smell (plus helps to retain the cold in the bait keeping it firm and therefore helping it to stay on the hook better).
The biggest downside is the cooler does not completely seal like snap on lid so when you are not catfishing you will get a bit more “aroma” than a standard bucket, but if you keep it refrigerated (or frozen) it will really help with the smell also.
